Epstein designing and engineering Bakery Expansion for La Lorraine in Romania

This 77,600 square foot addition will produce baguettes, baked breads and filled bread/pastry items

Epstein has recently been selected by La Lorraine Bakery Group and Macromex to design and engineer the expansion of their existing bakery facility in Campia Turzii, Cluj County, Romania. For this 77,600 square foot addition, Epstein will provide full design and engineering services, including architectural, civil, structural, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and electrical disciplines. Epstein will also coordinate the refrigeration system design with the original facility design-build contractor.

The expansion will include approximately 71,000 square feet of additional raw material storage areas including temperature and humidity controlled environments, preparation kitchens, dough production areas, and production space for the addition of three full production lines to produce baguettes, artisan breads, and filled bread/pastry items. All products produced on these three lines will be partially baked and flash frozen items packaged for bulk distribution to food service distribution companies, in-store grocery bakeries, and other bulk food consumers. In addition to the raw material and production areas the expansion will also include a 6,600 square feet second floor office area expansion onto the existing one story building and conversion of the existing ground floor office into and large employee welfare area for locker rooms, shower facilities, canteen and toilet rooms.

Epstein is also preparing the design and engineering of all of the process utility system to support the three new production lines of which the various components are being supplied by 7 different equipment suppliers/manufacturers for the dry bulk storage and measuring, dough mixing, dough kneading, dough formers, fillers, proof and bake ovens, cool spirals, spiral freezers, carton formers and packaging lines.

The La Lorraine facility in Campia Turzii is a jointly owned facility between La Lorraine and Macromex. La Lorraine Bakery Group, a 100% Belgian owned company, is the largest bakery company in Belgium and is the industry leader in the production of frozen bake-off products in Europe. Macromex is a Romanian food service distributor in operation for over 20 years providing leading food brand products to over 11,000 across Romania.
