We are pleased to share recently received images for two Epstein-designed and constructed projects at Newly Weds Foods in Chicago, Illinois.

Epstein provided full-service design, engineering and construction services for a new 300,000 square foot, 2-story manufacturing facility. The building’s first floor features 150,000 square feet of automated packaging, warehousing and distribution center, while the second floor boasts 150,000 square feet of food production and blending operations. This project is a rebuild of part of Newly Weds Foods’ plant that which was destroyed by fire in the spring of 2019.

In addition to the manufacturing facility, Epstein created a multi-layered design program that would serve as the company’s global innovation hub – their Research & Development Center. The center had to function as a scientific testing center for new product development, but also had to function as a strategic interaction space where clients could come and not only see, but taste their products for the first time. At the core of this project is the flavorings and coasting lab, a multifunctional open plan space where food scientists develop new products, conduct research, test products in culinary test labs, as well as house office functions, hold meetings and meet with clients.

Epstein implemented an array of team spaces of varying sizes to accommodate all of these functions. From small huddle rooms, medium conference spaces to large training and lecture areas the concept plans for cooperative work environments with the flexibility through work surfaces, furniture and acoustic controls. Nearly as important are the food science test kitchens, pilot lab and large culinary center. In these spaces products move from concept to implementation with the focus again on communal work zones and client interaction.

Epstein also provided full MEP design and coordination for over 200 pieces of testing equipment. The culinary center is a fully functional commercial kitchen with an adjoining sensory lab and conference area. We had one focus, which was to bring the client’s motto of “Inspiring New Tastes” to life. The result was a scientific research building that does not feel like a traditional laboratory, but looks to the future by providing areas for collaborative research for multiple group sizes, and maintains cleanliness with modern surfaces and finishes yet still provides an elevated interior design that is as inspiring to clients as it is to the staff.
