For this weeks Epstein Throwback Thursday we take a trip back to September 1970 for the opening of a 45,000 square foot addition to Franklin Park, Illinois School District No. 84s West School. This addition provided not only much needed kindergarten through six-grade classroom space, but also a new gymnasium, arts-specific rooms as well as a library, conference rooms and a multi-purpose area.

Epsteins design blended seamlessly with the existing building and was completed on the site of the 1914 original school house. This new addition was necessitated in order for the West School to be in compliance with the 1969 State of Illinois Life Safety code provisions representing the minimum standards necessary to insure the health and safety of its students.

The West School is still in use and looking pretty good as well - although its now known as the Passow Elementary School, home of the Pandas! Passow serves more than 390 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, making it the largest elementary school in District 84.
