Our weekly Throwback Thursday journey through Epstein's archives takes us back to May, 1969 for the opening of the massive Fisher Foods Office & Distribution Center at 5300 Richmond Road in Bedford Heights, Ohio. Located on a 50-acre site in a suburb southeast of Cleveland, this 400,000 square foot complex facility served as a warehouse, office, garage, and computer center for Fisher Foods, who in the late 60s were one of Ohio's largest grocery and supermarket chains.

This Epstein designed and engineered building featured a dry grocery warehouse with an enclosed truck concourse able to contain 44 trucks, a 50,000 square foot office, laundry facilities, a sign shop and a 7,000 square foot vehicle maintenance facility. In addition, this Fisher Foods facility also included a special dock for shipping and receiving product via rail.

Fisher Foods was founded in Cleveland in 1907 as Fisher Brothers Company and for most of its 80 year history was Cleveland's largest grocery store. In 1997 Fisher was absorbed into Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle - yet another example of Pittsburgh dominating Cleveland. (Steelers/Browns reference)

This facility still exists and is currently being used by Giant Eagle's American Seaway Foods, Inc. division.
