For years the I.M. Pei-designed Jacob K. Javits Convention Center had become an exhibition center operator's worst nightmare. The ceiling leaked, lighting was horrendous and the exterior façade looked dated and tired. Almost all of these issues were the result of the design being too far reaching for the time and the technology of the 70s not capable of replicating Pei's 'Crystal Palace' vision. When Epstein, along with our local design partner, FXCollaborative, was hired by the Empire State Development Corporation – our directive was to create a new Javits by fully realizing Pei's original design intent.
The newly restored includes a complete renovation and modernization, a northward expansion, and a comprehensive sustainability strategy. The building's appearance, systems, urban linkages, and day-to-day performance have been transformed; and the original space frame and overall functionality maintained.
“The comprehensive renovation at the Javits Center has transformed the entire building, including the installation of a new glass façade, a new green roof, and new upgrades to its lighting, mechanical, and telecommunications systems. I saw firsthand the results of the reconstruction during the 2014 New York International Auto Show. The building has never looked better."Andrew M. Cuomo Governor, State of New York
