On Wednesday, May 3rd, Epstein’s chief process engineer, Mike Salazar, will be a featured panelist in a ‘Diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education’ discussion being organized by the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA). This round table conversation is for STEM professionals, educators, community organizers as well as diversity, inclusion and equity officers. And, the goal of this event is to understand the perspectives of STEM professionals, like Mike, to help develop strategies to diversify and strengthen the STEM education to career pipeline.
In addition to Mike, panelists for this important STEM/Diversity talk include Anna Kaatz, PhD, MPH, the director of computational sciences at the Center for Women’s Health Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Dr. Mia Layne, an OB/GYN physician at the Little Company of Mary Hospital; Dr. Michael Horn, assistant professor at Northwestern University and; Donnell Layne, a technologist.

About Mike Salazar
Mr. Salazar joined Epstein in 2016 bringing with him over 15 years of experience in plant engineering for baking and food processing companies like M&M/Mars, Nestle, ARYZTA, Johnsonville, and Tyson Foods. During Mike’s career he has demonstrated expertise at managing, designing and budgeting the installation of production and manufacturing lines, eliminating outdated equipment with new state of the art high speed automated systems, and reducing production waste. In addition, during Mike’s time as a plant engineer he directed plants downtime metrics 5 Y’s and root cause analysis, set-up and oversaw a completed “ready to eat” food manufacturing production line, established facilities management strategic direction plan, and scheduled facility maintenance and modifications, including estimates on equipment, labor, materials and other related costs. From Mr. Salazar’s plant engineering experience he has also authored several articles in industry trade publications like Baking and Snack Magazine.
In addition to Mr. Salazar’s management and design experience, he is also heavily involved in engineering industry groups including currently serving as the President of the Chicago Chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
