CHICAGO, January 18, 2010 -- Epstein, the Chicago-based architecture, interiors, engineering and construction firm, was awarded a 2010 Institute Honor Award by the American Institute of Architects.
Designed by Epstein’s Director of Design, Andrew Metter, FAIA, the Serta International Center, located in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, is a 90,000-square-foot World Headquarters/R&D facility that borders and takes advantage of a protected wetlands area, allowing all work areas to have vistas to the outdoors.
“I’m honored that our vision for the Serta International Center was recognized by the AIA. The final product is the direct result of a wonderful client that truly appreciates architecture, coupled with an incredibly dedicated and creative design and engineering team,” said Mr. Metter.
The project consists of 60,000 square feet of office, showroom and presentation areas, plus a 20,000 square foot research and development center, and 10,00 S.F. of other support space.
The architectural massing of the building was developed to express the two main programmatic functions: research and development and office work space. The office work space is contained in a linear structure which parallels the property line of the site, opening views to the wetlands. This allows natural light and equal visual access to the landscape for all workers in the building.
The second level opens onto an outdoor lunch deck area covered by a sunshade canopy, which is articulated as a pattern that reflects Serta’s interest in textures and fabrics.
