Epstein’s John Patelski Speaks at WERC Conference on Sustainable Design for Warehousing and Distribution Facilities, Highlighting JohnsonDiversey Project
Chicago, April 24, 2009 – John R. Patelski, P.E., LEED AP, executive managing director and president of engineering and construction for Epstein, will share his company’s expertise in sustainable design at the Annual Conference of the Warehousing Education and Research Council in Atlanta on April 27. His presentation will feature Epstein’s design and engineering of the JohnsonDiversey LEED-NC Gold-Certified distribution center in Sturtevant, Wisconsin.
Patelski says, “Green design and green operations are practices that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment. There are five broad areas in green design and construction: sustainable site planning, safeguarding water and water efficiency, energy efficiency and renewable energy, conservation of materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.”
Sustainable buildings are important because buildings comprise 40 percent of the primary energy consumption in the US, says Patelski. In addition, he notes, new government policy direction and regulations make sustainability essential. For example, Patelski cites the federal government’s cap-and-trade program that is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80 per cent by 2050.
Industrial facilities have a great deal of impact on the environment, Patelski points out. Among the impacts are energy consumption, waste consumption, waste generation, transportation, building material consumption, chemical use in cleaning and maintenance. Large warehouses use large amounts of land as well.
Building owners and occupants need to be aware of the LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) standards that rate buildings according to strictly defined criteria. Epstein’s design and engineering of JohnsonDiversey’s new 550,000-square-foot distribution center was aimed at LEED certification from the beginning of the process. Says Patelski: “JohnsonDiversey wanted a safe, healthy, high-performance facility and specified LEED certification as the framework in which this would be achieved.”
Using Epstein’s proprietary modeling system, the design consolidates multiple local warehouses into a single facility to realize operational and real estate cost savings. “Our design work also aligns with JohnsonDiversey’s corporate responsibility program and builds on the company’s legacy of environmental achievements,” Patelski notes.
