CHICAGO, Feb. 13 – Epstein has been awarded the Eminent Conceptor Award of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois, the highest award for engineering excellence in the state.
Epstein was honored for its work on McCormick Place West, the recently opened 2,385,077-square-foot addition to McCormick Place, maintaining its leadership as the largest exhibition space in the United States.
The award is given annually to a firm that demonstrates “a high degree of merit and ingenuity, contributes to the advancement of the private practice of engineering, and enhances the economic and social welfare of the general public.” Epstein also was honored for the structural engineering work on the building.
“The award recognizes the work of an outstanding group of architects and engineers who made McCormick Place West the leading facility it is, and did so ahead of schedule,” said John Patelski, executive managing director for Epstein.
Epstein previously won the award in 1989 for its work on United Airlines’ Terminal One at O’Hare International Airport.
Epstein was part of a consortium, Mc4West, that was awarded an $850 million contract to design and construct the addition. The building is recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as the largest LEED-certified new construction in the U.S.
Epstein served as architect and engineer-of-record and also provided architectural design services along with structural, civil and MEP engineering services. In addition to Epstein’s architectural and engineering role, Interior Space International, Epstein’s interior design subsidiary, provided interior design services, and Epstein’s graphic design group, neXt wayfinding + design, provided environmental graphics for this expansion.
The West Expansion includes approximately 459,000 square feet of exhibition space, 140,750 square feet of meeting/banquet space, a 103,750-square-foot ballroom, as well as associated food and support service spaces.
