Todays Epstein Throwback Thursday feature takes us back to December, 1970 for the opening of the 260,000 square foot food distribution center for Supermarkets General Corporation in Woodbridge, New Jersey. Supermarkets General was the parent company for the Pathmark grocery chain which operated in the Northeastern United States from 1968 through 2015 and pioneered the use of checkout scanners.
This Epstein designed and engineered facility featured a 37 foot high, -20°F freezer and utilized insulated metal wall panels and over 1,000 tons of refrigerant. This building housed produce and dairy/deli departments as well as highly automated meat cutting operation. In addition, there was an enclosed railroad dock which accommodated 18 cars and also an exterior truck dock for 53 trucks. Lastly, this facility provided over 12,000 square feet of office space.
As mentioned earlier, Pathmark is no longer in business but that doesnt mean this facility isnt still be used. Today this facility located at 301 Blair Road is now, after a large addition to the original Supermarkets building, part of a massive Amazon fulfillment center campus.
