Earlier this week we exhibited at the International Baking Industry Expo (IBIE) in Vegas the preeminent event for the grain-based food industry, bringing together more than 20,000 baking professionals from 100 different countries and every segment of the baking business. Based on our attendance at IBIE we thought for today's Epstein Throwback Thursday we'd highlight one of the largest baking facilities we've ever designed and engineered for Steinberg Foods, Limited in Montreal.

For Steinberg's we provided master planning, architectural design and full-service engineering for multiple facilities in Montreal. These buildings included grocery distribution centers, truck maintenance facilities, laundry plants and 316,000 square feet delivered in two phases - dedicated to baking operations. The original 200,000 square foot baking facility when completed in 1965 was the largest and most automated facility of its kind in Canada, and the 116,000 square foot expansion completed in '72 allowed for the consolidation of Steinberg's specialty bakery into the main facility and expanded the production lines.

For those of you not up to date with your Canadian grocery chain history, Steinberg's was a large-family owned grocery chain that operated out of the Quebec and Ontario provinces. The company was founded by immigrants in 1917 and after being sold to private entities in 1989 was shuttered in 1992. But that was not the end of our baking facility, the building has been repurposed and now it's the home to Accent Fairchild, a leading provider of consumer products serving the Canadian market.
