In January of 1930, the United States plunged into a great economic depression with over 1,300 bank failures and nearly 4.5 million unemployed. A. Epstein was faced with the daunting task of surviving these bleak economic times, but during this difficult period A. Epstein was able to not only survive, but miraculously thrive through incredible hard work, dedication and good fortune. A. Epstein and his small staff worked overtime (without additional compensation and in some cases bypassing pay altogether) to deliver projects for their clients. During the 30s, A. Epstein was involved in our first aviation project for United Air Lines in Kansas City, Missouri; a large-scale exhibition center in Chicago, the International Amphitheater; and our most influential project – the Rebuilding of the Union Stockyards in Chicago, Illinois. This rebuilding project was vital to the survival of Chicago’s meatpacking industry and A. Epstein’s timely service helped make a name for our firm in the food processing industry. It was also during the 30s that Abraham Epstein’s oldest son Raymond joined the firm, beginning a career that would last nearly 50 years.
