Epstein provided full-service architectural, engineering and construction management services for a 156,000 square foot expansion of a dry grocery distribution center and a 38-foot clear height roof raising for this existing 630,000 square foot facility. The 156,000 square foot expansion combined with the raising of the roof to a clear height of 38 feet increased the capacity of this facility by more than 18.5 million cubic feet.
The 630,000 square foot roof was raised 20 feet in five sequentially phased lifts, while maintaining full operation of the facility. A unique temporary closure system maintained a weather tight facility during the entire lifting process.
Installation of a mechanization system that includes 48 palletizing stations fed by two (2) separate high-speed sorters and six - three high pick modules will complete this expansion and modernization..
A new addressable full facility fire alarm system was designed to replace the existing outdated system. The new system is state-of-the art with full supervisory and audio-visual functions. The design of the new system was phased so that the existing areas could maintain their present fire alarm and detection capabilities until the roof was raised within a particular area. Special mounting details were provided for the horns and strobes within the warehouse so that the devices would be subject to minimal material handling damage while maintaining the required audio and visual coverage. Epstein provided field observation and start-up services during construction.
