WinCo Foods, LLC
Ceres, California
Epstein provided design-build services for a 725,000 square foot full-line grocery distribution center for WinCo Foods, Inc., the West-Coast based grocery store chain currently operating more than 48 stores in five states including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Nevada. Epstein’s services included a master plan for the site as well as providing construction documents that included our firm’s full range of disciplines including architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering design as well as material handling and fire protection.
The new facility consists of a 413,000 square foot dry grocery warehouse, a 285,000 square foot perishable warehouse, 20,000 square feet of office space, a 23,000 square foot trailer return center, a 23,000 square foot vehicle maintenance facility, and a guard house.
The distribution center is a steel frame structure with a panelized wood roof deck. Tilt-up concrete wall panels at dock walls and offices are utilized with insulated metal panels elsewhere. The fully developed site also included fueling, truck and trailer parking, a truck scale and fire pump house and a water storage tank. The distribution center was completed in July of 2004.
As part of Epstein’s design-build services our engineers provided full MEP design services including HVAC ammonia refrigeration, electrical distribution, lighting, plumbing and fire protection. The design included a 2,500 ton, two stage ammonia refrigeration system serving a -10 F freezer and various produce rooms. Epstein also designed the emergency power system as well as the high-piled storage in-rack fire suppression system. ESFR systems were used in dry storage areas while double interlock and large drop systems were designed for the refrigerated spaces. A diesel powered fire pump and 250,000 gallon fire tank were included to support the ESFR systems.
