Medline Industries, Inc. is America’s largest privately-held national manufacturer and distributor of health care supplies and services. The company manufactures and distributes more than 100,000 health care products including medical, surgical and apparel items and currently has six North American manufacturing facilities, more than 25 joint venture manufacturing plants worldwide and 27 distribution centers. Since May 2002, Epstein has worked hand-in-hand with Medline to expand this distribution network to meet the ever-growing needs of the health care industry. This work has amounted to over 2.3 million square feet in 10 different locations.
Epstein has developed and constructed new distribution centers as well as facility expansions for Medline. Epstein provided value-added services including due diligence, site selection assistance (working closely with Medline’s real estate service providers), land purchase assistance and negotiations with local authorities along with architectural and engineering expertise. These combined services resulted in a streamlined, cost-effective process to secure and prepare sites for these facilities.
Medline’s distribution centers were designed and built using basic, sound construction techniques and materials to ensure economical facilities and long-term building performance. Tilt-up concrete panels constructed with casting beds enabled the pouring of a slab floor after the facility’s walls and roof were erected. This approach allowed the slab to be poured in a controlled environment, satisfying Medline’s requirement for high quality floors. Mechanical systems were used for ventilation as well as the smoke evacuation system, eliminating the need for smoke venting and reducing overall costs.
Sound planning has enabled Epstein to complete these projects within aggressive completion schedules and with tight budgets. The San Antonio, Texas facility alone was completed in less than six months after ground was broken. Challenges ranging from site changes to record rainfall were met within the set schedule and budget. Today, Epstein continues to work closely with Medline to plan and develop additional facilities to maintain Medline as one of the leading health care products provider in the US. Project locations in progress or completed by Epstein include Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington.
