US Cellular – 13th Street
Chicago, Illinois
As part of Epstein’s nationwide retail store rollout contract with US Cellular, Epstein’s architects were responsible for the design one of the “greenest” and energy efficient stores of its kind in the United States. US Cellular’s13th Street Retail Outlet located in Chicago features numerous sustainable elements including lighting power reduction, recycled materials, regionally manufactured fixtures, Energy Star equipment, low-emitting materials, and a reduction in water usage. The 13th Street building received LEED-CI Gold certification and the Epstein design for this space will serve as the template for future U.S. Cellular LEED Certified spaces.
Specific Sustainable Features include:
• Highly efficient lighting helped reduce the amount of energy used for lighting by 25% over a comparable store.
• Daylight responsive controls, which were installed within 15 feet of the front windows, reduce the amount of artificial light required by maximizing the use of natural daylight.
• All the furniture used in this store was recycled from other US Cellular outlets.
• Over 90% of the computers, equipment and appliances installed in this store are Energy Star products which help reduce the environmental impacts caused by excessive energy use.
• Low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, carpets and furniture were used to decrease the amount of contaminates in the air.
• Through the use of double-flush toilets and low flow faucets this store uses 40% less water than a typical store.
