Epstein served as architect and engineer of record, from conceptual design through construction, including schematic design, final design/construction documents and administrative services for this flagship retail store. This project consisted of approximately 25,000 square feet, including retail, computer repair, and storage space contained within an existing four-story structure located on Chicago’s main shopping district of Michigan Avenue. The space also contains employee training facilities and a workshop/laboratory area, with a demonstration area and executive briefing room. The bulk of the sales activities and general office space occur on the street level and second floor. Bohlin Cywinski Jackson was the design architect for this project.
Unique features include an Epstein-designed all-glass monumental stair, all-glass indoor pedestrian bridge, and a glass skylight. The stair and bridge were the first all-glass structures to be approved by the City of Chicago. The approval process included load testing full-scale replica structures to 250% of the design load.
This store also utilizes City of Chicago Mayor Daley's green roof system model. The building contains a sizable rooftop garden that minimized the urban heat island effect. The greenery planted on the roof surface reduces heat gain in the summer and insulates the building in the winter which leads to a reduction in energy consumption.
