Epstein is providing architecture; interior design; civil, structural and MEP engineering; and LEED consulting services for the renovation of Building 12, as well as the Lobby renovation/expansion of the Main Hospital Building 200 at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois.
Epstein's scope of work for Building 12, which is a circa 1920s structure comprised of 23,600 gross square feet, includes the demolition of all interior walls & systems, asbestos & lead abatement, construction of new interiors, a new HVAC System, data & telecom, and window replacement. After Building 12 is renovated the VA will use the facility as a fitness center, office space for its compensation and pension groups and as a surgical simulation center.
Building 12, which is pursuing LEED-NC Silver certification, features many sustainable design elements including a ground source heat pump system to provide sustainable heating and cooling services, as well as photovoltaic roof shingles and a wind turbine to generate renewable energy.
The replacement lobby on the north side of Building 200 features a 4,000 square foot expansion of the existing 6,000 square foot main lobby. Epstein will extend this new façade to link four campus buildings including Building 200, the Spinal Cord facility, the Emergency Care Center, and the Blind Services Building. Epstein's civil engineers will also re-develop the site work and traffic patterns associated with this area to clarify and support the patient approach and drop-off, and improve user services.
Building 200 also includes a new canopy/entrance on the south side of the facility that will connect with the new turnaround and the new Winter Garden in Building 13.
Lastly, Building 200 will feature a renovated pedestrian corridor that will include new flooring and light fixtures.
