Scott Air Force Base SOC
Scott Air Force Base, Illinois Epstein is providing full-service architecture and engineering services for this $11 million, 35,350 square foot Security Operations Center (SOC) at Scott Air Force Base. The SOC will include administrative areas, training and classroom areas, conference rooms, a ballistic proof control center, an alarm room, long term detention, short term holding, investigations, interview rooms, weapons vaults, common areas including a breakroom, and mechanical and electrical areas. The project will include new pavement and parking lots, sidewalks, landscaping, and utilities. Supporting utilities will include gas, sewer, water, and underground electrical and communication services. The project will also include demolition of the existing 1970's facility and construction of a 2,400 square foot addition to the existing ANG warehouse. Although our client, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, will not immediately submit this project for LEED certification, Epstein is designing this facility to achieve LEED-NC Silver Status. The SOC features many sustainable features including:
•An Evapotransportation controlled irrigation system that senses how much need a landscape needs, potentially saving over 50% of irrigation water usage.
•Over 40% water use reduction throughout the entire facility by utilizing “green” plumbing fixtures
•Use of variable-frequency motors on the SOC’s fans, which saves energy by allowing the volume of air moved to match the systems demand
•Heat Recovery Wheels which exchange the energy contained in normally exhausted building air and use it to treat the incoming outdoor air. These “wheels” improve indoor air quality while simultaneously reduce the total HVAC equipment capacity. Overall the SOC will see a 27% increase in energy performance than a typical facility of its type according to the ASHRAE 90.1 standards.
