DEA North Central Laboratory
Chicago, Illinois Epstein provided complete architectural, engineering and space planning design services for the renovation and conversion of 53,000 square feet of office space for use by the Drug Enforcement Administration as their North Central Laboratory. This state-of-the-art, analytical chemistry laboratory facility includes supporting office and conference space; two high-security evidence vaults; a finger print lab; a 400 KW diesel driven back-up power source to maintain operation of laboratory equipment; equipment storage; and a physical fitness room with locker facilities. A high concentration of fume exhaust hoods -- more than 1 per chemist -- were installed in the laboratory areas, as well as, a significant amount of analytical and computer equipment. Due to the design requirements for this facility, the mechanical and electrical requirements, and the layout of the existing space, the project required extensive planning and coordination.
