W.W. Grainger Disaster Recovery Center
Kansas City, Missouri
W.W. Grainger is a 4.7 billion dollar company supplying facilities maintenance and building products. The company deals with over 100,000 customers daily, through 570 offices, and provides over 500,000 different products and 2.5 million repair parts. When Grainger realized they needed n 20,000 square foot rapid recovery data center to ensure uninterrupted data services for all their operations they selected Epstein to provide design/build services.
The new data center needed to be reliable, cost effective, and built quickly within an existing distribution facility. Our engineers and architects needed to analyze the existing distribution center infrastructure to support the new data center, and make improvements while maintaining ongoing operations at the building. Structural, mechanical, architectural, and electrical systems were reviewed and modified as needed to support the new data center. Critical path electrical and mechanical equipment was ordered early in the design stage in order to meet the demanding construction schedule. Cost estimates were provided throughout the project.
The total build-out area was approximately 20,000 square feet, of which 10,000 square feet was dedicated to the Disaster Recovery Data Center, which houses all the servers and computers. Along with the data center, the following auxiliary spaces where required by W.W. Grainger. One meeting room for 6-8 people, one unisex toilet, one data control center, office area for four cubicles, future office growth area, one battery room, and one electrical room.
