WMS Gaming Chicago, Illinois
WMS Gaming is a leading designer and manufacturer of state-of-the-art casino slot and gaming technology equipment. Epstein provided full-scope interior design and MEP/FP engineering services for WMS' Corporate Headquarters and Technology Campus in Chicago, Illinois. This 125,000 square foot project included office and employee amenity space, electronic testing labs, model shops and a recording studio.
The design inspiration for the WMS headquarters and technology campus came in large part from the firm’s own corporate commitment to its employees. The client’s wish was to create a dynamic, creative, flexible and functional space that embodied WMS's "People First" philosophy and fostered employee satisfaction and retention. The design challenge was to express the client’s culture while creating a space that was efficient and cost effective. This design philosophy played a critical role in enhancing WMS’s business plan as well:• Through the co-location of gaming designers, mathematicians and artists, product to market time has been reduced. • The new facility design contributed to the share price rise. • Enhanced WMS’s value to the neighborhood & the City of Chicago.
The existing building’s infrastructure played a critical role in the overall design concept in the following ways:• Painted brick walls, painted concrete flooring and steel columns were sandblasted and left exposed. • Splashes of color were used as a wayfinding system to direct individuals throughout the space. In addition, carpet colors were used as identification markers to distinguish different groups in the organization. • High ceilings were left exposed and painted white to create a loft effect. • Old elements from the manufacturing facility were left intact.
When completed, the space reflected the culture of the firm and provided WMS Gaming with a modern, efficient and dynamic new home.
