Union Station
Chicago, Illinois
Epstein unified and simplified Union Station’s current wayfinding system. The new system is a combination of clean and “contemporary design with elements of historical/neoclassical architecture and art deco inspired themes. The project scope included both interior and exterior programming & design as well as the creation of unique wayfinding maps for a confusing facility.
Exterior signage leads users to the facility from a several block radius. Epstein branded the canopy structures and entrances to generate a consistent look and to create focal points that inform passengers. The color choices relate to both Amtrak and Metra, the major tenants of the building, and actually help give the old facility a cleaner and much less cluttered look. Solid metal details ensure that the product will withstand the rigors of over 50,000 commuters per day.
