Naperville Auto Test Track
Naperville, Illinois
The Naperville Auto Test Track is a 7-acre facility located in Naperville, Illinois that provides a way for automobile customers to safely test drive passenger cars, light trucks and sport utility vehicles in a closed environment. The track is designed to allow drivers to experience everyday road conditions during their test drive, such as asphalt roadway, a railroad crossing, cobblestone surface area, suburban driveway, high bank testing area, skid pad, and an SUV testing area with a hill climb and rough road section.
The facility will also have the ability to serve as a weekend competitive track for car clubs and their spectators, as well as a training facility for local Police and Fire Departments. The high profile of the facility in the community demanded an attractive, landscaped development with careful planning for parking and safe access that can be accepted and welcomed as a good neighbor to the citizens of Naperville.
The Test Track is believed to be the only one of its kind in the United States and is comprised of the following elements:
7-acre Track comprised of 750 tons of asphalt & 1,000 square yards of concrete
Asphalt Track with specialty pavements including:
- 100 foot long Cobblestone Surface to simulate driving on a brick road
- A 10% Hill Climb Incline with exposed aggregate concrete surface intended to replicate driving on a dirt road
- High Bank Testing area with a 10% cross slope on asphalt surface
- Rough Road Testing on concrete pavement with embedded boulders (8-12 inches in size)
- Suburban Driveway & Curb comprised of standard concrete driveway
- Skid Pad Area regular asphalt pavement, irrigated so that it is constantly wet allows for wet braking tests
- High Friction Surface overlay on top of asphalt higher level of friction on some of the outside curves and the end of skid pad
- Simulated Railroad Crossing
Track Capacity varies depending upon how it is used, initially 3-4 cars at a time
3 Electronic Gates Rolling chain link gate on the outside of the track grounds, two armed gates that control access to the track surface
Tent Showcase Area paved area (10,000 square feet) available for gatherings/special events
11x8 Control Center houses track controls and various utilities
3 Security/Web Cameras used for security and show activity on the track that is web-based for live feeds to area car dealers
Lighting 28 poles providing illumination for night operations
24 parking spaces
The City of Naperville is the owner/developer, Epstein were the engineers and architects, working in conjunction with Paxton Waters PC, a track design consultant, and V3 Companies of Illinois, Ltd. were the general contractors for this development.
