Chicago, Illinois Epstein was responsible for the civil engineering design for this 60-story office high-rise in downtown Chicago which is pursuing LEED-CS Gold status. The civil project scope included a sanitary sewer connection to the City of Chicago public sewer, dual water main services for the building domestic water and fire protection, and storm sewer routing to the Chicago River. The storm sewer design included the use of a Vortechnics separator to remove a minimum of 80% total suspended solids prior to the water discharging to the river. The building will utilize river water for the cooling system. Epstein was responsible for designing a 48” diameter intake and 48”diameter discharge connection to the river wall and obtaining permits for these connections from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, and the City of Chicago Department of Sewers and Department of Transportation. Additionally, Epstein was responsible for the design of the modification to the LaSalle Street Bridge. The sidewalk portion of the bridge deck design included removal and replacement to accommodate architectural granite pavers in front of the building. The bridge design accounted for a ComEd duct bank that was suspended from the underside of the deck which was kept in service throughout construction.
