Aramark Uniform Services
Chicago, Illinois
Epstein was responsible for the architectural and engineering design of a commercial laundry in an industrial area on the south side of Chicago. The facility consists of 82,000 square feet of production area and docks on the first floor, 38,000 square feet of processing space on the second floor, a 16,000 square foot stockroom and 14,000 square feet of office space. The facility also has an 11,000 square foot vehicle maintenance facility bringing the project size to 161,000 square feet - the largest such plant for Aramark Uniform Services in the United States.
The plant was designed to process 1.1 million pounds of laundry per week and services 80 Aramark delivery routes. An added state-of-the-art feature to this facility is the infrared tracking system installed which allows employees to know where each garment is at every stage of the laundering process.
The plant’s building systems have been operational since the April 2004 startup and with the metered utility technologies implemented, the utility record’s first two full years of operation show a 42% overall energy usage reduction from the former South Michigan Avenue plant benchmark. Out of the 73 nationwide Aramark laundry facilities, the new Chicago operation ranked in the lowest 10% in water consumption per laundry unit, the primary component which has resulted in lowered gas and electric utility usage.
